How To Buy Bitcoins Online: The Best Bitcoin Exchanges

How To Buy Bitcoin

The Ultimate Guide To Purchasing BTC With Cash, Credit Card, PayPal, Bank Wire and Cryptocurrency

Money and currency are as interchangeable as Gold and Silver. These days it has been all too difficult to discern real money from money that actually has value. We all know that Bitcoin is fast becoming an oft-used form of currency, Buy Bitcoinsboth in day-to-day monetary transactions and as a long-term financial vehicle.

No matter your skill level with the cryptocurrency space, it is simple to get started. All you really need is a form of payment and the willingness to take action. Once you purchase and obtain your first Bitcoins, you will soon realize just how transformative the potential of the blockchain can be.

Owning and storing Bitcoins can be viewed in the same light as opening a Swiss Bank Account, except without the banking regulations involved.

Factors To Consider Before Making A Purchase Decision

Before purchasing from any exchanges make sure to properly investigate each one for a number of factors including:

  • Fees
  • Payment Methods and Funding Mechanisms
  • Countries Supported
  • Cryptocurrencies Supported
  • Purchase Limits
  • Mobile Functionality
  • Customer Service

What Is The Reputation Of The Exchange?

The best way to check the reputation of an exchange is to investigate the management, venture capital investors, and regulatory approvals. Be sure to consider where the exchange is physically located and how many years it has been in business

What Are The KYC And AML Requirements?

Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering (AML) regulations are designed to protect against illegal and/or fraudulent activity and are a requirement for cryptoasset exchanges in the United States. Always keep in mind the amount of personal information required to open an account and if there is multi-tier authentication. A higher level of regulation will ensure the long-term stability of an exchange and may benefit the consumer protection rights of the investor.

Does The Exchange Provide Insurance?

As the growth of cryptoasset exchanges has increased there has been a growth of insurance plans for exchanges. For example, Coinbase is one of the first companies to offer insurance for its clients’ Bitcoin holdings.

Hot Wallet Vs Cold Wallet

Always remember to secure your cryptoassets within a secure and dependable wallet (see our recommendations here). You have the option of choosing between a hot wallet and a cold wallet for your own security purposes.

Although an exchange, by default, will store the assets they trade, it is not always the safest place to store your cryptoassets. Our recommendation is to grab a Ledger Nano S which is one of the more secure hardware wallets around or KeepKey, which is connected to ShapeShift.

Cryptoassets are stored in either a hot wallet or cold storage. A hot wallet is connected to the Internet and can be directly accessed on a machine that has an Internet connection such as a web browser, desktop or mobile application. A cold wallet means the place where the cryptoassets are stored is not connected to the Internet such as a hardware or paper wallet.

How To Buy Bitcoin Online

This is a comprehensive guide to learning how to buy bitcoins online through a reliable cryptocurrency exchange. If you want to fully utilize each exchange make sure that you are fully verified and that you secure your account with a strong password along with Two-Factor Authentication. We have shared a number of methods for purchasing Bitcoin including Credit Card, Debit Card, PayPal, Cash, Bank Transfer, Bank Wire, Venmo, cryptocurrencies and more.

This guide will show you where you can buy bitcoin online effectively and efficiently.

How To Buy Bitcoin With A Credit Card or Debit Card

Buy Bitcoin With Credit Card

A credit card is one of the easiest to obtain methods of payment for the everyday person. Not only is buying bitcoin with a credit card or debit card one of the faster options for procuring bitcoin but also it is efficient and effective because you have a bank behind your purchase. At these exchanges, you typically have a choice between VISA, MasterCard and even American Express. Some services such as Cryptopay offer a prepaid card which you can load up and spend at department stores.

Signing up for a credit card is simple. Most credit card issuers generally require that you provide a legal name, birth date, address, Social Security Number (SSN) and an annual income. If you give an issuer your SSN they are then able to check your credit which determines whether or not you are able to receive the credit card.

Most institutional banks offer a debit card as well for customers to make purchases anytime they please from their bank accounts. Our recommendation is to narrow down your options for local banks and sign up with the one that suits you best.

If you are in a rush and need to buy bitcoins quickly, you have the option of purchasing Bitcoin with either a credit card or debit card on the following exchange platforms.

Changelly is an instant cryptocurrency exchange which supplies the best live rates on the market for every pair. The interface is colorful and simple to manage, and transactions are performed instantly. The Changelly robot is integrated from the trading platforms of Poloniex and Bittrex. Since the platform is purely a cryptocurrency exchange, in order to complete a transaction on Changelly, you will need to provide both a sender and recipient address. Changelly is a great option next to Shapeshift as a seamless cryptocurrency exchange.

Changelly charges a low commission fee of 0.5% and offers the best available rate at the moment the transaction is completed. Read our full review here.

Pros: Fast and simple to exchange cryptocurrency between one another.

Cons: Slightly higher fees than most exchanges.

Shapeshift.io is actually one of my favorite services. Shapeshift provides simple currency conversion and there is no account needed. This means you get to keep both your privacy and security and steer clear of another Mt. Gox event. The service works great if you have a hardware wallet such as the KeepKey. There is a small transaction fee, however, the convenience of the service far outweighs the costs.

A plethora of cryptocurrencies can be converted to and from Bitcoin (and amongst one another) including staples like Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, Ripple, and Monero. The company does not charge a specific fee and instead offers an exchange rate for each coin. In order to earn revenue by offering a profitable exchange rate, they typically charge in the range of 0.5% to 1% per transaction. One downside is that you can not fund your exchange with any type of Fiat currency, however, this can be easily remedied by first funding a Bitcoin wallet.

There are also Android and iOS mobile app versions of the Shapeshift service which work seamlessly. Highly recommended for those seeking privacy or speed and don’t mind the small fee.

Pros: Cryptocurrency exchange between over 40 cryptocurrencies. Available worldwide. Privacy. Speed.

Cons: A light fee charged on top of every transaction performed

Overall rating: 9.4

BitcoinsConclusion: Before investing or buying Bitcoins remember to always do your own research. One big tip is to always store your Bitcoins inside of a wallet for safe keeping. Too much currency held inside of an exchange puts you at great risk. A cold storage wallet will keep your Bitcoins safe in any event. Some of the most popular portable cold storage wallets include the Trezor, Ledger Nano S and KeepKey.

Our top-rated exchange for buying bitcoins online: Gemini (view site).

In addition to Gemini, Paxful, Kraken and other top-rated exchanges, our number one recommendation is to check out LocalBitcoins to meet up or exchange with nearby buyers and sellers. Additionally, locating a Bitcoin ATM nearby would be effective, although it may incur fees. As of 12/29/18 there are 7 Bitcoin ATMs in Hawaii.
